Why Viña del Mar?

Beaches, gardens and palaces — with Valparaíso next door

Founded in 1878 on the estate of the Vergara family, Viña del Mar grew into Chile’s favourite seaside resort: a city of wide avenues, parks, Belle Époque mansions and long sandy beaches, about 120 km from Santiago.

It is also the best base on the central coast. UNESCO-listed Valparaíso is twenty minutes away by train, the Concón dunes and Reñaca are just up the coast, and the cool-climate vineyards of the Casablanca Valley lie on the road to the capital. Come in February for the famous song festival, in summer for the beach, or any time for the sunsets.

The Reloj de Flores in Viña del Mar, a clock face planted with red and pink flowers on a grassy slope Viña del Mar city

Flower Clock (Reloj de Flores)

Viña del Mar’s most photographed landmark

A working clock whose face is a bed of flowers, set into the grassy slope of Cerro Castillo opposite Caleta Abarca beach. Installed in 1962, the year Viña del Mar hosted World Cup matches, it has become the city’s symbol — and the first photo stop on almost every coast tour.

Quinta Vergara

Park, palace and home of the song festival

The former estate of the Vergara family, founders of Viña del Mar, is now a public park of exotic trees around the Venetian-style Palacio Vergara, home of the city’s fine-arts museum. At its heart is the open-air amphitheatre where the Viña del Mar International Song Festival has been held every February since 1960.

Wulff Castle (Castillo Wulff)

A little castle on the rocks above the Pacific

Built in 1906 for the merchant Gustavo Adolfo Wulff on a rocky outcrop of Avenida Marina, this turreted mansion is one of the most photographed buildings on the coast. Today it is a municipal cultural centre with changing exhibitions and a glass-floored passage over the waves.

Playa Acapulco in Viña del Mar, with golden sand, turquoise water and apartment towers behind Beaches & the north coast

Viña del Mar’s Beaches

Caleta Abarca, El Sol, Acapulco and more

A chain of city beaches runs along the seafront, from little Caleta Abarca by the Flower Clock to the long urban sands of Acapulco, Los Marineros and El Sol, with the old iron Muelle Vergara pier in between. The sea is cold — the Humboldt Current sees to that — but the promenade, the sunsets and the summer atmosphere are the point.

The crest of a large sand dune at Concón with apartment towers on the horizon Beaches & the north coast

Concón Dunes

Sandboarding and sunsets above the sea

Just north of Reñaca, a protected field of huge sand dunes rises straight up from the coast road — a nature sanctuary with views over the whole bay. Climb for the sunset, try sandboarding where it is allowed, then head down to Concón for its famous seafood empanadas and the Roca Oceánica headland.

Colourful houses with red and pink roofs on Cerro Alegre, Valparaíso Valparaíso & wine country

Valparaíso

UNESCO-listed port city of hills, funiculars and murals

Viña’s older, wilder neighbour is only about twenty minutes away by train. Its historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, climbs a jumble of hills covered in colourful houses, linked by century-old funiculars (ascensores), stairways and some of the best street art in Latin America.

Visiting Viña del Mar: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Viña del Mar worth visiting?

Yes — it is one of the most pleasant cities in Chile, with beaches, parks, palaces and a relaxed seaside mood, and it makes the ideal base for Valparaíso, the Concón dunes and the Casablanca wine valley. You can compare the best tours here.

How do you get from Santiago to Viña del Mar?

Buses leave Santiago every few minutes and take about 1.5–2 hours; you can also drive via Route 68, book a private transfer or join a day tour. See our Santiago to Viña del Mar guide.

Can you do Viña del Mar and Valparaíso as a day trip from Santiago?

Yes, and it is one of the most popular day trips in Chile. Tours leave in the morning, cover both cities (often with a Casablanca Valley wine stop) and return in the evening. To really enjoy the coast, though, spend at least a night or two.

Can you swim in the sea at Viña del Mar?

You can, but the water is cold — usually around 13–17 °C because of the Humboldt Current — and the swell can be strong. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches with a green flag, in the summer season.

Viña del Mar or Valparaíso — where should I stay?

Viña for beaches, calm streets and modern hotels; Valparaíso for bohemian atmosphere and boutique hotels on the hills. They are 20 minutes apart. See where to stay.
